New years means to me out with the old and in with the new, a time to reflect on the events and experiences of the past year and to consider what changes or improvements one would like to make in the year to come. Here are some New Year resolutions to support our troops:
Practice Mindfulness
Many Americans who make New Year's Resolutions, put mindfulness on their to-do list, but it's a good idea to include thinking outside of our territorial bubble and thinking about those who are currently serving and making sacrifices, sacrifices that you can not fathom the extent of. Remember that the day-to-day lives of our troops, the spouses, and the military children can be challenging in ways that civilians may never fully comprehend and that they are undertaking great acrifices to ensure our freedoms.
Giving Makes Us Happy
Supporting the U.S. military, whether it be through a donation to a military support organization such as the USO, volunteering with the military, or simply being an outspoken advocate, can raise your happiness and give you those feel-good moments. When we are generous our brains release several chemicals that give us a sense of joy and peace.
Get Connected with the Military Community
Some people may stereotype military members as monsters, but that is far from the truth, they are not monsters, but heroes that protect and serve those on the homefront. It's as simple as reaching out to a service member in your community, asking them about their life, take time to listen and learn about their experiences. In doing so, you may learn about the challenges and triumphs of our nation's military community.
Closing
Every day, while we sleep and go about our daily lives, America's service members selflessly put their lives on the line to keep us safe and free. Please take a moment to let our troops know that they are appreciated for their service and sacrifice.
